Members

Propel is Newfoundland and Labrador's only independent R&D organization that is exclusively focused on the oil and gas industry. We are a not for profit corporation based in St. John's, focused on providing answers to identified problems for the oil and gas industry. Our membership represents our key stakeholders, and through their annual dues, they are afforded preferential access to our specialized facilities, R&D project management expertise, and the opportunity to participate in our ongoing applied research activities and Joint Industry Projects. Our members represent the regional oil and gas industry stakeholders and range from oil and gas owner/operators to the industry's leading service and supply companies.

Our highly specialized secure facility is located at 130 Southside Road and features the following:
  • 3000 sq.ft. Class 1, Zone 2 High Hazard Industrial Space
  • 4500 sq.ft. newly renovated office space with fully integrated network and phone system. This space can accommodate up to 40 professional staff on short or long term engagements.
  • Pressure Volume Temperature (PVT) System; used for analysis of black oils, volatile oils and gas condensate reservoir fluids.
  • Gasometer with GOR Apparatus; used to measure atmospheric gas samples and determine the gas-oil ratio and overall composition.
  • Varian 3800 Gas Chromatograph; this unit is used to conduct compositional analysis of both gas and gas condensate. It is equipped with a Pulse Flame Photometric Detector used for determining sulphur content.
  • Two-Zone Environmental Chamber with a temperature range of -25 oC to +40oC.

Flow Test Facility

Propel is currently working with Petroleum Research Atlantic Canada (PRAC), Research Development Corporation of NL (RDC) and the oil and gas owner/operators to evaluate and determine the magnitude of a multipurpose flow test facility to serve the regional oil and gas industry. The proposed flow test facility will allow for the evaluation and development of new technologies for offshore applications and will help address some of the ongoing issues faced by the oil and gas owner/operators. We are excited to be adding to the province's R&D capacity and look forward to having a world class test facility developed right here in St. John's. Capabilities will include:
  • Modelling and simulation of the behaviour of different well completion systems and their effect/interaction with oil and gas reservoirs and,
  • Modelling and simulation offshore surface and subsea process systems to verify performance in varying applications.

R&D Project Management

Using the Project Management Institute (PMI) standards, Propel's expertise also includes specialized project management for R&D applications. Our successful track record over the last 5 years as the Centre for Marine CNG has seen us complete large and small scale R&D projects on 5 continents, all delivered on scope, schedule, quality and budget.
